May 13, 2012 – second day of the board exam simulation. Since I made quite a kilometric post last night, I would just try to keep this brief. So without further ado:

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY. Not surprisingly, this exam was the least hard for me. Though I tensed at the first items (alas, they’re about the mischievous NORMALITY!), I managed to recall everything that I have learned over the past years. Fortunately, there were only a small number of items taken from electroanalytical chemistry and instrumental analysis, and I answered most of them. The test was concentrated (or so I thought) on classical quantitative analysis.

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. It’s the coup de grâce. As expected, I struggled during the entire test. My “sure” answers were less than 70%. ‘Nuff said.

Okay, I’m almost done with my piece. Just to wrap everything up, here’s the order of the subject exams in order of increasing difficulty:

Analytical Chemistry < Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry < Inorganic Chemistry < Physical Chemistry

Well, the colors don’t mean anything but speculation as of now. I still have about four months (or less) to strive harder. And strive harder I will!

May 12, 2012 – first day of my review at BRAINS Training and Review Center for the chemistry board examination on September. I (actually, we) was (were) completely stripped off of any idea, not even a stray one, as to what subject exams are to be taken this day. So off we went virtually without prep (it’s a diagnostic test, anyway). We soon found out that the stars dictated that we take Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry today. Here’s what went down at my end:

INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. The exam was just OK. There were a couple of advanced topics (MOTs, for instance), but the bulk of the examination was taken from a freshmen chemistry course. However, I failed to answer the last five items of the exam NOT because I didn’t know the answers but because I didn’t notice them! I thought the examination was just composed of 110 questions, but it was, as I soon found out, 115 items. I know that it is purely gross negligence on my part, and that’s why it sucks even more. Not to sound cocky, but I could totally solve for the pH values of the species given. Well, I could do that better than compute for the bond order of the Cl2 cation. On the upside, I’m lucky on the grounds that it has already happened now so that maybe, hopefully, I would learn from my mistake and not make a rolling repetition on the actual boards.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY. In my opinion, this was easier (this is on relative terms—mind you) than the inorganic chemistry test. Most of the reactions that made it to the questionnaire were familiar. I just wondered why they would give us synthetically useless reactions (e.g., reaction of a Grignard reagent with the acetylide anion). The biochemistry part was a little confusing especially for someone who only took up eight units of the course. But still, I managed to survive.

Or so I think. Results won’t be out until next week, and I still have to conquer Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry tomorrow. Just made this quick post just for the heck of it. I rest my case for now.
