I was browsing my past messages on FB when I saw this particular message. It made me realize three things which were true and valid [more than] two years ago:

I was fond of abbreviating words. Physics = p6; kc = kasi. Luckily, I’ve gotten rid of this annoying habit. I now type and text like a regular human being.

I used various emoticons: T_T for crying, XD for “that rockability smile,” and so on. Now my choices were limited to , , and .

I was worried about my midterm exam in General Physics I. My initial grade was 29/60 which was below the 50% cut-off. Fortunately, after a rigorous portion of checking/rechecking, I managed to get a score of 31/60. Those two points were heaven-sent because if they didn’t exist, then I would have had a failed exam in my college life. But then again, my midterm examination grade in General Physics I is currently my lowest score ever. Now I just laugh at this experience. Why was I so worried about my grades? It’s not as if they could define me as a person. (Note: I got a high final grade in General Physics I, by the way — in case you’re wondering).

Two years is indeed a long time.

My last undergraduate semester started its motion last November 2. So far, here’s what I’ve got to say.

ADVANCED BIOCHEMISTRY. Not surprisingly, this is my most favorite subject so far. Just yesterday, we discussed the ten steps of glycolysis and I could only say WOW. I’m seriously thinking of majoring in biochemistry and in fact, I love it now more than Analytical Chemistry.

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY III. Quantum mechanics, period. It is full of complex equations complete with complicated operators, differentials, and integrals. I initially assumed that I won’t like it so just imagine my surprise when I caught myself actually paying close attention to the discussion. Of course, I love biochemistry more, but considering my ordeal with Physical Chemistry II last semester, I can say Physical Chemistry III is a breathe of fresh air. I just hope that it would continue to be that way for a long, long time.

ADVANCED ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. Orgo without reactions is like Po without his awesomeness. And man, my last Orgo is filled with graphs and no reaction – at all!

ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY. We’ll start our discussion on the cycles of matter and energy tomorrow, and as of today, I think I’m going to like this subject since it involves the application of all the branches of chemistry to the environment. It’s more of ecology with a unique twist of chemistry.

INDUSTRIAL MICROBIOLOGY. I look forward to memorizing scientific names so that I could at least feel like a BS Biology student. This subject is mostly about the application of microorganisms to several chemical industries. I never thought that some chemicals could not be made without microbes. So far, it is interesting.

That’s it! This is just a quick update. I need to focus my energy on school matters. Now if you’ll excuse me… END.

Here’s my new and revised schedule starting June 7.

TUESDAY
08:30 – 10:00 Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Lecture)
12:00 – 01:00 Chemistry Jurisprudence and Ethics
01:00 – 04:00 Physical Chemistry II (Laboratory)

WEDNESDAY
10:00 – 01:00 Physical Chemistry II (Lecture)
01:00 – 02:30 Logic and Scientific Methods
04:00 – 07:00 Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Laboratory)

FRIDAY
08:30 – 10:00 Advanced Analytical Chemistry (Lecture)
10:00 – 12:00 Chemical Literature
01:00 – 04:00 Chemistry Statistics
04:30 – 05:30 Industrial Chemistry and Stoichiometry

SATURDAY
10:00 – 01:00 Industrial Chemistry and Stoichiometry
01:00 – 02:30 Logic and Scientific Methods

As you can see, all of the subjects that I’ll be taking up this semester have “chemistry” or “chemical” or “science” in their respective title. This fact implies an intrapersonal warning: beware. With perseverance and God’s help, though, I know that I can rise above and beat the odds.

May all of us have a fruitful semester. Good luck!

I had only published one blog post this semester. Despite the Christmas vacation and the numerous free times that I’d had, I could not bring myself to write something new because I was totally absorbed in what I do. To date, this is the most stressful semester that I’ve encountered in my life. And why not, it’s when unappreciated passion, unrewarded efforts, and unreciprocated perseverance reached their abundance. It’s when being optimistic, even a little, could be fatal to your expectations.

I always remind myself that I could no longer go back in time to correct my mistakes and exert more effort, except if I could obtain a license to disobey the laws of physics. But then again, it is impossible to forget all the unreasonable happenings that seem to reverberate forever in your head. Accepting the stark reality that you’ve failed takes more than just courage.

Returning from the desk, I am.
