Sexism in the English Language

It’s been monhs ago when we have tackled this lesson in our “English Proficiency Instruction I” class with Prof. Monje. The topic is about Sexism in the English Language which is based on the essay of Dr. Thelma Kintanar.

Why is that women are rendered invisible when we are referring to the general gender? There are several cases on which we can get simplified examples be it cliches or day-to-day conversations. For instance:

No man is an island.

The term “man” in the sentence obviously refers to both men and women. But to the miticulous eyes of English majors, this can signal inferiority to the women race. Also, the sentence gives a misleading impression whether it talks about man alone or both men and women.

In reality, women are treated unfairly not only in the field of language but also in other factors as well. Back in history, we learned that women are not given the same benefits that the state gives it male members. For example, only men can vote in the elections. Women are only treated as prorperties, which is a form of discrimination against them.

Sexism in the English language is only one of the many products brought to us by acculturation. The challenge to us, individuals, is to remedy this kind of problem in Modern English. Both genders must be given exactly the same respect. All along, we are one and the same because we are all created by God.

The New WWW

Internet acronyms became handy and popular especially in chat messaging. It provides a short but stylish way of stating something by replacing the original phrase with a couple of letters which is usually the first letters of each of words in the phrase. These are some of the most common acronyms used:

  • LOL – Laugh Out Loud
  • BTW – By the Way
  • FYI – For Your Information
  • RSN – Real Soon Now
  • AFK – Away From Keyboard
  • BRB – Be Right Back
  • IMHO – In My Humble Opinion
  • IMNSHO – In My Not So Humble Opinion
  • GMTA – Great Minds Think Alike
  • F2F – Face-to-Face

But have you heard about the internet acronym “WWW”? No, I’m not talking about “World Wide Web”. I’m talking about this story.

During our “Introduction to Philosophy and Ethics” class this morning, we discussed about St. Thomas Aquinas’s Natural Law and Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative. Suddenly Prof. Deray, our instructor, uttered the letters “WWW” while stating an example. The whole class stopped. Then she explained the meaning of the acronym. Guess what? “WWW” actually stands for “What Went Wrong?”. We laughed as we learned the FYI. At the end of the class, we sang “Only Selfless Love”. We almost forgot that this is our last meeting for the subject on this semester. We had a couple of picture takings. We also told Prof. Deray that we’ll miss her.

It’s funny how acronyms can change a day.

Tanga mong puso o bayan mong sawi?

After the long wait, I finally grabbed the opportunity to watch the music video of “Iiyak na Lang” by Calzada on Youtube. I was shocked to find out that Lito Camo is the vocalist of the group! I never really expected to see him on the video. But then, he is and that reason probably explains why I liked the song more. Anyway, here is the official music video of “Iiyak na Lang” by Calzada.

A Note of Thanks

The end draws near and we can do nothing about it. After what seemed to be endless times we’ve spent together, we cannot escape the reality. “All composite things are doomed to extinction”, as Buddha says it. And now that we are about to be temporarily separated form each other, I would like to say thank you.

I entered college believing that from that day, I would be alone most of the time. I was informed that in college, you are on your own. If this were a fact, I’m happy to say that in our block, we never felt the same. In a short time, we felt a close bond to each other.

After months of hardwork and perseverance, we now harvest the fruits of our labor. We have to face the reality that not all of us are going to continue. Some will transfer, some will stay. But one thing is for sure: I won’t ever be ashamed that, once in my life, I became a member of PLM GEN – ED I – BLOCK 4; SY 2008 – 2009. Good luck and God bless in your journey, fellow block mates.
